ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. – Feb. 28, 2022 — Dr. Fuad Elkhoury of Orange County Urology Associates (OCUA) is now offering HoLep (Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate) in Orange County, a highly precise treatment option for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Dr. Elkhoury’s first HoLep was on Oct. 15, 2021, at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center.
Dr. Elkhoury specializes in HoLep, performing several HoLeps per week throughout Orange County, including at Hoag Newport and Hoag Irvine, Orange Coast Memorial, Saddleback Memorial, and Providence Mission Hospital.
Holmium laser prostate surgery is a minimally invasive treatment for an enlarged prostate (BPH). The procedure uses a scope per urethra with a high-powered laser to carefully core out and remove the excess prostate tissue that is causing the obstruction of the urethra.
BPH is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can affect men as they get older. BPH can lead to serious complications such as recurrent UTIs, bladder stones, urinary retention, and kidney failure (rare). It is important to seek treatment early for this condition because, if left untreated, it can lead to urinary retention and poor bladder and kidney function.
Symptoms from BPH can include difficulty starting to urinate, a weak urinary stream, increased frequency of urination, increased nighttime urination, leakage of urine, incomplete emptying of the bladder, and retention of urine. The diagnosis can usually be made by a physician after taking a history and carefully examining the prostate gland. A urine sample is usually checked to make sure there is no blood or infection.
Not everyone who develops BPH will need treatment. Patients who would benefit most from HoLep are those with prostate glands over 80 grams, and who would prefer the most effective transurethral approach to treat their BPH. Dr. Elkhoury is the only urologist in Orange County performing HoLep and is excited to offer this innovative procedure.
What are the benefits of HoLep treatment for BPH?
- A minimally invasive procedure for men with large prostates who are usually managed with either a traditional open or robotic simple prostatectomy.
- The residual tissue pieces of the prostate that are removed by the surgeon can be examined to check for cancerous cells. This differs from other laser procedures which destroy the prostate tissue that is removed.
- Catheter remains overnight compared to open or robotic simple prostatectomy which usually requires a catheter for a week.
- Less bleeding during the procedure
- Faster recovery time
- 24-hour or less hospital stay
