Holmium Laser Enucleation of Prostate
The new gold standard for treating men with enlarged prostates has finally arrived in Orange County, and we at Orange County Urology Associates are proud to be the only group offering this surgery to our community. Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (called HoLEP) is an innovative surgical technique that removes more obstructing prostate tissue than any other technique available, which translates into better long-term outcomes for men experiencing urinary symptoms because of an enlarged prostate. Patients love their outcomes–significantly stronger urinary streams, improved urinary frequency and urgency, and enhanced quality of life.
Figure 1 – The prostate is peeled off of the prostatic capsule and placed into the bladder, and it is then morcellated and removed from the bladder through the scope
We perform HoLEP entirely through the urethra, so there are no incisions. We use a specialized laser that peels away the obstructing prostate from the prostatic capsule, like peeling an orange. We then morcellate the prostate in the bladder and remove it through the scope. After surgery, the patient stays in the hospital overnight while we drain the bladder with a Foley catheter, which we remove a few days after surgery. We are performing HoLEP procedures at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Hoag Hospital, in Irvine. Please call (949) 855-1101 to schedule a consultation.
